It was a warm and wet winter and the average temp of 6.2 was 1.7 above the average
and the warmest since 2007. We had the lowest number of air frosts I have ever recorded
for the winter period with 11 in all. The next lowest was 1990 with 12.
While the rest of England was having floods this winter our rainfall here in N.E.Norfolk
was 130% of the winter average but in no way exceptional as 2004, 2007 and 2010 were all
wetter winters. We had only one day of sleet/snow falling which makes it equal lowest with 1989.
The summer months of 2013 (June,July,Aug) were the driest summer months that I have recorded in 50 years of measuring rainfall. The total of 69.2mm was significantly lower than the previous lowest of 96mm in 1990.
Coldest July since 2000.Despite higher rainfall in June and July we have still only had 70% of our normal rainfall for first 7 months of this year.
Rainfall in March,April & May had amounted to 38.6mm. Normal for this period would be 144mm. We had therefore had only 27% of the expected rain. The temperature has also been higher than any spring temperatures I have recorded in the last 40 years.
After December's record breaking cold January 2011 was close to average while February had above average temperatures. However December's very low temperatures resulted in the winter as a whole being a degree colder than normal but 1C warmer than 2010's winter.
The temp OF -17.1c on night of 18th/19thDec 2010 was the coldest temp I have recorded in Buxton in the last 36 years. Previous lowest was -16.3C on 28/1/79. There were 4 consecutive nights with the minimum temp below -12C.
After a very wet winter the spring and summer of 2010 have been very dry. While we have had 87% of our normal rain for the first 7 months of the year, we have had only 63% of our normal spring and summer rain up to end July. However the very wet August and September have brought the rainfall total back to normal for the first 9 months of the year.
The winter period of Dec,Jan,Feb was the coldest since 1996.It was also the wettest winter I have recorded in Buxton in the last 40 years. There was rain or snow in Feb on every day but one. 2009
2009 May was the driest & coldest since 1996 and the spring period of Mar,Apr,May was also the driest since 1996 with only 56% of our normal rainfall. 2008
This was nearly as wet as 2007 with 135% of the normal rainfall. beyond this it was the wettest and coldest year since 2001, despite the warm January.
January 2008 was the first January ever recorded with no air frosts. It was also the warmest apart from 2007.
